How to Install a Street Sign Post

When installing a U-channel street sign post, it is important to use the proper equipment and technique to get the best results.
First: Things you need
The first step is to gather the right equipment and materials. These include a U-channel post, a post driver, spray paint, a permanent marker, a measuring tape, a level and a stepladder (for taller posts).
Second: Choosing a post length
U-channel sign posts come in a number of standard lengths. It is common to find U-channel posts in lengths of four, six, seven, eight, nine, 10 and 12 feet. When selecting a post length, it is important to consider how deep into the ground you need to drive the post in order to give it enough stability. If you do not drive a post deep enough into the ground, it can loosen and start to lean over time. You should drive a four-foot post 1.5 feet into the ground, leaving 2.5 feet above ground. Drive a six-foot post 2.5 feet into the ground, leaving 3.5 feet above ground. For a seven-foot post, drive it 2.5 feet into the ground, leaving 4.5 feet above ground. You should drive posts of eight, nine, 10 and 12 feet 3.5 feet into the ground.
Third: Preparing the post and location
Use a measuring tape to measure the length of your post and use a marker to indicate the segment that should go beneath the ground level. Take your time in determining the best location for your post; then, mark the precise spot on the ground with spray paint.
Fourth: Driving the post
Hold the post at an angle with its base resting on the spot you have marked. While it is at an angle, slip the open end of the post hole driver over the end of the post and slowly walk it to an upright position. You can probably drive a post under eight feet without using a stepladder. For posts of nine, 10 or 12 feet, you may need to use a ladder. Make sure your stepladder is sturdy and set squarely on level ground. To start driving the post, lift up the post hole driver and allow it to fall down, letting its weight drive the post into the ground. Continue until the post reaches a few inches into the ground. Now it is time to check if the post is level. Hold the long side of your level up against both sides of your post in turn. You can determine if your post is level if the air bubble in your level sits between the two lines. Once you know your post is level, continue to use to post driver to drive your post up to the depth mark you have made.
